Harriet Martineau

Born in Norwich, Harriet Martineau (1802 –1876) was an English social theorist and writer, often cited as the first female sociologist. In 1834, she paid a long visit to the United States, where her support of abolitionism caused controversy. This was increased by the publication of Society in America (1837) and How to Observe Morals and Manners (1838), two books that led to the founding of modern sociology.
