William Gooch (1681 – 1751) of Great Yarmouth, later Sir William, became colonial governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1747. The city of Staunton, Virginia is named after his wife Lady Rebecca Staunton. In 1749 he returned to England, and is buried in the Minster Church of St Nicholas.
