John Pory

John Pory (1572 – 1636), assistant to Richard Hakluyt (famous promoter of America in sixteenth and seventeenth centuries), and first cousin of Temperance Flowerdew, was baptised in Thompson.  He emigrated to Virginia on the Third Supply, a fleet of nine ships carrying stores and immigrants.  He was First Secretary of the Council of Virginia from 1619 to 1621 – and was elected speaker of the first representative assembly held in America in July 1619.  Pory retuned to England in 1623.
