Great Yarmouth

A number of New World settlers had their roots in this seaside town, including Sir William Gooch, who became colonial governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1747.

The town was also home to William and Joanna Towne, whose family were caught up in the 1692 Salem witchcraft trials.

Thomas Willet (or Willett), the first mayor of New York, also has connections to the town, being the grandson of a Great Yarmouth man.
