Captain John Mason

King’s Lynn was the birthplace of Captain John Mason (1586 – 1635), Governor of Newfoundland from 1615 -1621, who published the first reliable maps of the area. In 1622 he obtained an area of land in New England, and in 1629 sponsored an expedition to establish a settlement at the newly named province of New Hampshire. In 1635 he was appointed Vice-Admiral of New England, but he died before taking office. He is probably buried in Westminster Abbey, but no record of his burial or grave has been located.
