Madeleine Carroll

Madeleine Carroll (1906 – 1987), an English actress, who had starred in a number of films including Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, moved to Norfolk when she married her first husband, Captain Phillip Astley of Constable Hall on 26 March 1931.  Astley and Carroll divorced in 1940.  She became a naturalised citizen of the United States in 1943.

After Carroll’s only sister Marguerite was killed in the Blitz, she gave up acting to work as a Red Cross nurse during World War Two.  She served in Foggia, Italy, at the 61st Station Hospital, where many American airmen were treated.  She was awarded Legion of Honour by France and the American Medal of Freedom for her work.
